CR books available!Hi guys! :wave:
Well for a while i've mentioned on and off that I have some good news for you, (and me too!) and after the SF Con that has finally become reality. My dear friend Fwah Storm, author of Jericho and owner of Reload comics offered and assisted me with printing CR, and lo and behold this is now up and running!
I have about 60 of the first edition of CR, i.e books I've printed myself, and I gave 10 to Fwah to sell on his online shop. The rest I will be taking with me to conventions and selling face to face until they're gone. After that, volume one and two of CR will be printed through and distributed by Reload comics, - so if you want them as they are, get them quick!
Reload will be selling them for £12.99 which covers the cost of the book and the cost of shipping to anywhere. Fwah has said he will send them overseas as needed, and hopefully he will be able to get a few copies in some comic stores in the US, so fingers crossed for that :D

my good friend :icon47ness: and i :icondinmoney: will be manning the :iconsamurai-genji: Samurai-Genji booth #144. Well, i will be on the genji side, ness will be on his side of booth and selling his comic SSnPP (which you should check out!), but we are calling our joint endever "Dark Mana Studios" (working title, what do you think of name?). As usual, all the SamGen chapters 1-3 will be on sale, as well as some prints and give-aways.  
For you upcoming artists out there, i will be doing some live painting from 1-3pm on a projection screen, so if its anything like last time, it should look FREAKING SIIIICK!! Will be doing a character design demo, that will cover the process from sketch to.. how ever far we get haha! I will be talking about my process and what it takes to create professional level character concepts.

Confidence and Ease Of UseThe final part of marketing (at least, that I can think up right now) involves marketing to yourself. This is confidence. Walt Disney said it best, so I'll just quote him and save myself some time:
"Somehow I can't believe there are any heights that can't be scaled by a man who knows the secret of making dreams come true. This special secret, it seems to me, can be summarized in four C's. They are Curiosity, Confidence, Courage, and Constancy and the greatest of these is Confidence. When you believe a thing, believe it all the way, implicitly and unquestionably."
No one else is going to like or appreciate or enjoy work that you yourself don't have confidence in. All the marketing in the world can't save you from a lack of confidence.

Promotion and PlaceThis is part 3 of my marketing journals, and it ties up what we've already learned.
The problem with promotion is that we're familiar with two types:
1. The snake-oil salesman in the town square, hawking his miracle cure. It's just some well-water he picked up a couple towns back, but the label claims all sorts of things and he sure do talk a good talk, don't he?
2. The TV ad shouting at us about whatever. Used to be that they tried to sell a product. Nowadays they try to sell a "lifestyle". I don't buy Brand X toilet paper because I'm an outdoors-focused adventurer with a surfboard tied to the top of my Woody station wagon.
Promotion isn't just advertisement. Advertisement is one step away from a dirty word, and it won't work for you. Seriously, you're just starting out here- you can't afford the amount of advertising you'd need to get noticed. The best you'll do is a couple of easily overlooked banner ads or little teeny squares on the side of a page here and there. Modern people ign

Marketing isn't just advertising, although it can seem that way sometimes. In fact, advertising may be the worst aspect and least effective part of marketing for you. You don't have the ability to make huge "ad buys" or the time to wait and "build brand awareness" or anything like that. No, you need to focus on other aspects of marketing. Remember, marketing is about engagement. You must engage with your potential customers. You don't have to be their friend, but you do have to be a good partner.
At the heart of marketing is the 4 Ps- Product, Price, Promotion, and Place. Let's start with Product and Price.
Product
Product sounds straightforward- it's the art, right? Well, not necessarily. Let me explain it by asking a question. What is Facebook's product? I'll give you a moment to think.

This is nothing more than a vent and is something that everyone shouldn't be too considered about, so don't worry, I'm fine right now. I'm just throwing out a list of things I despise that people do or think that really irks the hell out of me that I've been suppressing for awhile...which by the way, when I use the word 'you', I'm not pointing at anyone directly...or at least, not at anyone I know personally or to you guys. So yeah, long ass rant time.
I hate it when:
-people look down on others for their lack of abilities in one or more fields.
Honestly! Nothing pisses me off more than those who just smirk at someone just because they can't perform it well. Hey, asshole; everyone starts somewhere!
- others look at you weird or belittle you with snarky remarks for complimenting on their work.

I thought i'd share something with you, going along the same theme as one of my previous journals, - about who you admire. I've decided to do some  letters to a certain handful of people who i really love to thank them for sharing their talents and inspiring me. I hardly expect to hear anything back, and they probably get buried in oodles of fanmail every day, but I know that when i get lovely messages from you lot, it makes me exceedingly happy!
This brings me to my first letter, - which i realized today, is actually the most important of them all..
And it's to you.
To every single person who follows, occasionally visits or even just ghosts past my work with a pleasant thought. Thank you. You guys are the -sole- reason that i've managed to keep Crankrats going for as long as it has. Every message i get from new and old watchers alike, be it a simple compliment, a crit, a suggestion or question is time and effort taken out of your own lives to make,
Just start.Inspired by this:
I know a few people who, like me, want to make their own comics and put them out there. They practice constantly, always working hard to improve their skills so they can get ready to put their best foot forward. They don't want to start doing it until they feel they're "ready".
This, I feel, is a mistake.
Yes, we all need to practice, we all need to get better, but if you spend most of your time practicing random elements, drawing pinups just to try new software out, drawing fan art to improve your skills or for whatever reason, then after weeks, months, years pass and you're still "practicing", you need to start seriously asking yourself if you really care about making comics, or if you're just saying it.
I know I'm talking pretty big for someone who just started a webcomic and only has four pages online (for the record, I've got many more I haven't shown yet), but one thing I learned after so many years of being indecisive and wondering if I was goo

I understand her frustration- half the timeI feel like i have to jump through hoops to try to register as a professional at conventions despite having worked on Justice League, Green Lantern, Earth-2, Teen Titans, Comedian, Fairest, Fathom, Broken Pieces... and that was just last year. How To Market Your Art Without Hurting It Part 1Marketing is a dirty word, and that's because it's been misused. Don't run from Marketing- instead, understand what it really is and how it can help you.
At its heart, marketing is all about making a profound connection between you and other people. It's about letting them know that there is something awesome that you've made and that they will really enjoy. Do you like your art? Do you want to let people know about your art? Do you want to share something awesome with them?
Do you want to make some money? That's a crude question, I'm a bad man for asking that, but it's still important. Imagine if you could make a good living (paid for house, car, family, fun, etc) just from doing what you love. Sounds pretty good, doesn't it? There is such a thing as integrity, and it'd be nice to make a living while maintaining it.
Marketing is about all of those things, and in this series of journal posts I'm going to explain a bit about marketing to hopefully help you.

I agree, in the gaming industry as well a people just design the woman to be eye candy and it's quite pathetic... The Bechdel Test should be applied to games and artwork as well as films.

Well, I don't think it's right to criticise what other artists enjoy drawing. If you think it's overdone and perverted, then cool; you don't need to do it. But telling other artists they shouldn't draw any sort of subject matter is crossing your boundaries.

while i get what you are saying and it cannot be denied that fantasy art is rife with some of the biggest bezongas. i do feel compelled to note that liking boobs is not perverted. that word is thrown around a lot. perverted is " sexually abnormal and unacceptable practices or tendencies". that would be like masturbating to chicken feet while watching Oprah. now that perverted lol

Oh, I like boobs. It's just - I'm sure you've seen - there are artists that seem to have a checklist for their characters; hypersexualized young submissive female being a priority, the rest of the design becomes secondary, so long as the hook is sexuality. It's straight up subjugation.
